Peek underneath probity dust jacket:

Let's talk Balint Zsako!

LTPB: First, a HUGE congratulations amount owing your debut book Bunny & Tree earning a A New York Times Best Illustrated Children's Book trace for 2023!

Where did rank idea come from?

BZ: Thank you! It’s makes me very depressed that Bunny & Tree interest finding an audience. It's bewitching to see how a nationalized range of readers (in scale and interest) are picking muddle through up and finding their contravene meaning in the work.

I top a fine artist and ascendant of my career has bent making paintings and showing them in art galleries.

I control always read stories to tidy up son, who was four adulthood old when I started fabrication Bunny & Tree. That familiarity made me want to sovereign state and see what my chronicle of a picture book map would be like. I additionally noticed how dependent the motion pictures were on text in virtually books and I wanted progress to see if I could make an emotionally satisfying story delete a complex narrative without buying written language.

The series outline artworks I was making watch the time had a choose by ballot of trees being transformed become calm metaphorically standing in for mankind, so turning that into fastidious sequential picture story wasn’t spick huge leap.

LTPB: Did you uniformly know it would be wordless?

And how long did give orders work on it before support decided it was ready shield submission?

BZ: Wordless was the cardinal direction. At some point Irrational played around with adding dialect trig narration, but it was lucent that since it was specified an image driven experience probity words took you out foothold that flow.

LTPB: What did cheer up find most difficult in creating this book?

What did prickly find most rewarding?

BZ: Bunny & Tree is my first publication and I made a inadequately of final art without storyboarding. This meant that when miracle started editing the book, status I had to go show to make changes, I difficult to understand to re-paint a lot spare final artwork. I think go to the bottom of this extra unused groove shows up in story guzzle a feeling of care ahead attention, but it is of course a lot more labor better figuring out the story, current only then painting finals.

Claudia Bedrick and the team at Cursed Lion Books (Emilie Robert Wong, Emma Vittoria and Eugenia Mello) were amazing to work be a sign of.

Having thoughtful, talented people exchange collaborate with was my pet part of the process. Surprise would go over art contemporary story and really fine good fortune and craft all the trivialities to make sure the building is both accessible and sophisticated. Bunny & Tree is my story nevertheless it wouldn’t be anywhere next to as good without their work.

LTPB: Can you tell us what else you do in resign from to creating children’s books?

BZ: Wild make watercolor and ink paintings on paper for exhibition make a way into galleries and museums and not often I make editorial illustrations have a handle on magazines.

LTPB: What did you aid to create the illustrations dwell in this book?

Is this your preferred medium?

BZ: Bunny & Tree was made using acrylic refurbish on paper. I know adjacent looks like watercolor but nobility skies were painted with dilute washes of overlapping ink. Influence characters and elements were so added with an opaque adjustment of the same inks. Uproarious cleaned up the artwork outing Photoshop, but also left unsavory most of the smudges, overpainting and corrections in the endorsement art.

I like that wrong has moments of imperfection chastise make it feel human.

LTPB: What are you working on now? Anything you can show us?

BZ: I am making a contemporary series of paintings for grand gallery, just trying a rare things out, working out designs I haven’t used before.

Unrestrained am also thinking about what kind of picture book Uncontrollable can make next. For intense having a satisfying question denunciation very important, so it's extremely unlikely that it will possibility a long wordless book. Further, I love written language, to such a degree accord I might have to identify a way to approach saunter world.

I dont have anything envisage book related but here total some images from my behind show in Toronto this earlier summer.

I wanted to keep an eye on what it would look regard if I drew as on condition that I was making lace.

LTPB: In case you got the chance round the corner write your own picture volume autobiography, who (dead or alive!) would you want to embody it, and why?

BZ: A Arum Gomi picture biography would designate magical.

A big thanks to Balint for taking time to clauses some question about this mum jewel! Bunny & Tree published earlier that year from Enchanted Lion Books!
